The Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adeoye Aribasoye, has described Children’s Day as a significant celebration of the future of the nation and the prospects to watch out for.
In a press statement to commemorate this year’s celebration, the Speaker underscored the value of children as the succeeding generation, stressing that any nation that undervalues the young ones has lost its vision for a sustainable future.
Underlining the importance of protecting the rights of children under the law, Aribasoye frowned at all forms of abuse against children and the exploitation of their vulnerabilities.
“These children need adequate care and protection. Society must understand that child rights are human rights, and this must be universally respected,” the Speaker pointed out.
He stated further that, “It is remarkable that in Ekiti State, relevant laws have been passed to ensure the protection of children and establish their rights, including the right to education.”
Rt. Hon. Aribasoye highlighted the combined efforts of the legislature and the executive in Ekiti State towards ensuring that all children are in school.
He said, “We’ve seriously reduced the number of out-of-school children in Ekiti State to a very minimal percentage. The current administration of Governor Biodun Oyebanji is committed to further ensuring that no child of school age, including the physically challenged, is denied the right to education.”
The lawmaker assured that the 7th Assembly, under his watch, will not relent in promoting and protecting the rights of children across the state, urging parents and stakeholders to always ensure maximum support for children to realise their goals, talents, and destinies.
World Children’s Day is UNICEF’s global day of action for children, by children, marking the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
