Body of Slain Ekiti Born Bishop Arrives Nigeria for Burial

The body of Bishop Dr Taiwo Michael Fakunle, the Nigerian cleric killed in Johannesburg, South Africa, has been brought to Nigeria, paving the way for his burial following his tragic death.

Fakunle, a native of Iye Ekiti in Ekiti State and founder of Settled Word Leadership and Theological Seminary in South Africa, was reportedly killed by unidentified assailants at his residence in Kensington, Johannesburg, on Friday, September 4, 2026, at about 7pm.

Before his death, the cleric reportedly suffered a burglary at his residence, during which his laptop and other valuables were stolen. He was said to have reported the incident to the police before he was subsequently attacked with multiple gunshots fired through the entrance door of his residence.

The reported killing was brought before the Ekiti State House of Assembly as a matter of urgent public importance, with lawmakers urged to seek the intervention of the Federal Government, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Nigerian diplomatic mission in South Africa to ensure a thorough investigation and justice for the deceased.

The motion also called for the Nigerian mission to provide necessary support to the bereaved family, while urging the Federal Government, relevant agencies and the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission to facilitate the repatriation of the remains and provide financial, logistical and humanitarian assistance to the family.

The lawmaker who presented the matter further called for diplomatic engagement with the South African authorities to establish the circumstances surrounding the killing and ensure that anyone found responsible is brought to justice.

Honourable Iyabo Fakunle Okieimen, a member of the Ekiti State House of Assembly and half-sibling of the deceased, was among those directly affected by the tragedy. The incident has also cast a shadow over the cleric’s family, church, community and associates.

The arrival of Fakunle’s remains in Nigeria marks a significant step towards his final burial, even as calls continue for justice and support for his bereaved family.
