The management of Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology, Ikere-Ekiti has placed a ban on all activities of the three trade unions including ASUU, NASU and SSANU with immediate effect.
It would be recalled that members of the unions had staged a protest on June 2, 2022 against the activities of Chief Afolabi Ojuawo led Governing Council on the acount of which the Visitor to the institution, Gov Kayode Fayemi had to set up a Technical Committee which met and gave recommendations to Government, Leading to the dissolution of the Governing Council.
The state Government had also decided to re-organise the University’s headship reviewing the appointment of the Registrar and the University Librarian while further decisions on other issues are being awaited.
The management explained that since the protest of June 2, 2022, the experience of Management with the Staff Unions has been that of one week, one trouble.
According to the memo
“The height of it was yesterday, šrd August, 2022 when the ASUU Chairperson, the NASU Chairman and the Secretary to SSANU
stormed the office of the Vice-Chancellor, threatening him and threatening to breach the
peace on campus just because the Registrar’s appointment was reviewed. They shouted and embarrassed the Vice-Chancellor and they thereafter went to the Bursar’s office to do same.
As the Vice-Chancellor decided to leave the office, the NASU Chairman seized his vehicles and that of the Bursar and also physically harassed the Vice Chancellor, resisting his movement to leave the premises, behaving like he would beat the Vice-Chancellor up and thereafter boasting openly that he would kill the Vice-Chancellor.
The Vice-Chancellor and the Bursar had to escape through the pedestrian gate at the Health Centre since the Secretary to SSANU and one Mr. Wole Olusona had gone to lock up the University’s main gate (having overpowered the Security men at the gate) to prevent movement in and out of the University.
In the meantime, they succeeded in scuttling the Matriculation ceremony slated for Thursday, 4th August, 2022.
Management views these acts as too unbecoming and unexpected of responsible staff members hiding under the guise of union activism. BOUESTI, being a new University, certainly does not need these distractions if it must develop properly to fulfil the vision and mission for which it was established. It has therefore, become imperative to ensure that irresponsible acts like these are avoided in our University.
After a review of the incidents and in line with the directive of the Ekiti State Governor and Visitor to the University, the three trade unions of Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology, Ikere-Ekiti, ASUU, SSANU and NASU are hereby proscribed with immediate effect.
Members of staff are enjoined to go about their normal duties without fear and desist from getting involved in unlawful activities.”
