The Ekiti State Government has concluded its 16 days of activism against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) with a grand gesture, empowering over 100 survivors with ₦100,000 each to support business ventures aimed at mitigating the effects of the violence they endured.
During the cheque presentation ceremony, Dr. Olayemi Oyebanji, the wife of the state governor, called on Nigerians to actively join in the fight against GBV. She emphasized the importance of creating a society where survivors can live free from discrimination.
Dr. Oyebanji, who led a sensitization road walk in Ado-Ekiti, lamented the growing threat GBV poses to societal harmony and reiterated the government’s commitment to punishing perpetrators under the law.
Addressing the survivors, Dr. Oyebanji encouraged them to view the financial assistance as a seed of hope, urging them to nurture it to grow their businesses.
She affirmed, “This token is a reminder that you are not forgotten and that you have a community that stands by you.” She further encouraged citizens to report incidents of GBV to relevant authorities to ensure timely intervention and justice.
Other dignitaries, including Deputy Governor Chief Monisade Afuye, Commissioner for Women Affairs Mrs. Olapeju Babafemi, and Ekiti State Police Commissioner Mr. Akinwale Adeniran, echoed calls for collective action against GBV.
