Ekiti Ministry of Agric, Food Security prescribes high bio security exercise for Poultry farmers

The Special Adviser to Ekiti state Governor Mr Biodun Oyebanji on Agriculture and food security Mr Ebenezer Boluwade has appealed to poultry farmers in the state to maintain proper hygienic environment to protect their birds from infectious diseases like avian influenza (bird flu) and others.

Boluwade while fielding questions from journalists in his office in Ado Ekiti charged poultry farmers to adhere strictly to bio security measures, maintain cleanliness of the fowl pens and their surroundings in order to keep their rearing safe.

According to him, farmers must ensure proper fumigation, of the birds environment, isolation of any birds returning from shows for 30 days to observe for signs of illness before placing them in the flock, and restricting traffic onto and off of poultry pens.

In his words

Avian influenza, or “bird flu,” is a respiratory disease of birds caused by influenza A viruses. Wildbirds, such as ducks, gulls, and shorebirds, can carry and spread the viruses but may show no signs of illness while avian influenza can kill domestic poultry such as chickens, turkeys, ducks, and geese

Boluwade charged poultry farmers in the state to report issues that have to do with the health of their birds to the nearest Veterinary officials in their locality or Animal disease desk officer in the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Ado Ekiti.

Also, the director of Veterinary Services in the Ministry, Dr. Emmanuel Osayomi said the current administration of Governor Biodun Oyebanji was taking every route to I crease quality of life through the engagement of farmers and helping them in whatever areas they are interested.

He commended the Federal Government for supporting the state in the area capacity building and provision of surveillance framework.
