An alumnus of Ekiti State University, Ekiti State University, Mr Oluwatosin Ajayi, has called on well placed individuals in Ekiti State to complement government’s drive towards eradicating poverty and curbing crime through deliberate financial empowerment of youths and women. He stressed that sustainable development cannot be left to government alone, noting that collective responsibility remains the bedrock of a stable and prosperous society.

Ajayi made the appeal in Imesi Ekiti during an empowerment programme where about 250 widows drawn from towns and communities in Gboyin Aiyekire Local Government Area benefitted from financial support. The event attracted community leaders, religious figures and residents who gathered to witness what many described as a timely intervention.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Ajayi explained that poverty and crime are deeply interconnected social challenges that demand proactive solutions. According to him, empowering vulnerable groups, particularly widows who often bear enormous family responsibilities alone, is one practical way to strengthen households and shield communities from social vices.

He explained that his gesture was inspired by the various empowerment initiatives of Governor Biodun Oyebanji, whose administration, he said has consistently prioritised grassroots development. Ajayi said supporting widows who struggle with raising children and managing home front pressures was a moral duty that society must not neglect.

The alumnus expressed satisfaction with ongoing projects across communities in the local government area, commending the governor’s commitment to infrastructural renewal and inclusive governance. He observed that visible development at the grassroots serves as motivation for private citizens to also play their part in uplifting the vulnerable.

Community leaders present at the event, including Pastor Tunji Akinyemi and Mr Lekan Ijidale, applauded the initiative, describing it as impactful and worthy of emulation. They said Ajayi had over the years distinguished himself as a philanthropist dedicated to community service and human capital development.

The leaders further noted that consistent acts of generosity such as the one witnessed in Imesi Ekiti help to restore hope among disadvantaged groups. They urged other indigenes of the area, particularly those blessed with resources, to invest in people oriented programmes capable of transforming lives.

Some of the beneficiaries, visibly elated, expressed gratitude to the donor for remembering them in their time of need. They offered prayers for greater success in his endeavours, stating that the support would go a long way in improving their small scale businesses and catering for their children.
