To address the demographic composition of correctional facilities in Nigeria, the Minister of State for Youth Development, Atodele Olawande paid a working visit to the Medium Correctional Centre in Kuje where he had engagement with the inmates therein.
Recognizing that nearly 90% of inmates fall within the youth category, the Minister emphasized the role of the ministry of Youth in enhancing the well-being of inmates nationwide.
The Minister assured inmates of collaborative efforts between the Ministries of Youth Development and the Ministry of Interior to provide comprehensive training in vocational and digital skills in order to facilitate the reintegration of inmates into society successfully.
In addition to skill development, the Minister unveiled plans for extensive sensitization programs which he said are designed to reshape public perceptions of inmates and ex-convicts, fostering a more positive narrative.
Seizing the opportunity to introduce the Ministry’s initiatives, Hon. Ayodele Olawande encouraged inmates to grasp the opportunities presented, emphasizing the potential for personal growth and future productivity.
Olawande also took a tour of the Correctional Centre’s facilities where he engaged some of them who were into in shoe-making; purchasing their products.
The Minister’s was accompanied by a delegation which comprises Ms. Rinsola Abiola, SSA to the President on Citizenship and Leadership; Ms. Abiola Arogundade, SSA to the President on Technical, Vocational, and Entrepreneurship Education; and Ms. Titilope Gbadamosi, SA to the President on Youth Initiatives (Monitoring & Delivery).
