The 1993/99 set of Christ’s School, Ado Ekiti, marked their 25th anniversary in grand style with a week-long celebration filled with impactful activities, intellectual sessions, and generous contributions to their alma mater.
The event featured workshops for students, rewards for teachers, and the unveiling of plans for a sports complex, reinforcing the set’s commitment to giving back.
Former Commissioner for Education in Ekiti State, Mr. Kehinde Ojo, who was one of the principals during the set’s time at the school, expressed delight at the successes of the alumni, crediting their accomplishments to the discipline instilled in them by Christ’s School and called for a return to corrective discipline in Nigerian schools.
“Moderate use of corrective measures, including the cane, when necessary, is vital to shaping students into disciplined individuals. Policies that discourage effective punishment risk creating a generation plagued by character flaws,” Ojo said.
The Chairman of the set, Mr. Anthony Babatola, who described the group as driven and united, recalled how they replaced old blackboards with modern marker boards during their 20th-anniversary celebration and highlighted other impactful contributions made over the years.
“The discipline we once frowned upon is now the foundation of the successes we celebrate today. It is a privilege to give back to the school that molded us,” Babatola remarked, commending members at home and abroad for their support.
In a lecture, Professor Idowu Omotuyi, another member of the set, stressed the need to preserve the heritage of Christ’s School. He called on the government and stakeholders to prioritize the maintenance of historical school structures.
“Christ’s School is not just an institution but a legacy. Preserving its infrastructure is a shared responsibility of students, alumni, and the government,” Omotuyi said.
The week-long celebration also featured hands-on STEM sessions for students, including robotics, cybersecurity, and phishing email analysis, led by set members. Customized school bags, notepads, and other educational items were distributed to students, while cash rewards were given to outstanding performers spotted during the celebrations.
A proposed architectural model for a state-of-the-art sports complex was also presented to the school.
Former principals and teachers, including Mr. Kehinde Ojo, Mrs. Florence Dada, Prince Ebenezer Adegbenro, and Mrs. Folake Alade, were honored with Outstanding Tutors and Mentors Awards in recognition of their invaluable contributions to the alumni’s formative years.
The celebration, which some members in the diaspora joined virtually, left a lasting impression on students and staff, demonstrating the alumni’s dedication to fostering growth and excellence in Christ’s School.
