Ekiti Government Empowers Persons with Disabilities Through Vocational Training

The Ekiti State Government has empowered 40 persons with disabilities (PWDs) by providing them with vocational training and essential tools to promote self-reliance and economic independence.

The initiative, coordinated by the Office of Disability Affairs and the Special Adviser on Special Education and Social Inclusion, culminated in a graduation ceremony at the Skill Acquisition Centre, Ilokun, Ado-Ekiti.

The beneficiaries were trained in diverse fields, including Shoe Making, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Cosmetology and Hairdressing, Catering and Hospitality, and Tailoring and Fashion Designing. Each graduate received tools and equipment tailored to their trade, marking a significant step towards achieving financial independence.

Speaking at the event, the Chairman of the Board of Disability Affairs, Dr. Ogunlade Ebenezer, encouraged the graduates to focus on their capabilities rather than societal perceptions. He urged them to pursue excellence in their chosen fields, saying, “If one can aspire to be a veterinary doctor, each of you can excel in your career.”

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Special Education and Social Inclusion, Princess Adetoun Agboola, reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to empowering PWDs. She announced a financial assistance program for beneficiaries set to commence in January 2025. Praising Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s efforts, she said, “His work speaks for itself, and he remains dedicated to empowering the PWD community.”

Beneficiaries like Mr. Ife Abejide, an ICT graduate, and Mrs. Fasoranti Ruth, who received catering equipment, expressed gratitude for the life-changing support. The ceremony ended on a hopeful note, with the graduates poised to contribute meaningfully to an inclusive and equitable Ekiti State.
