Ekiti NUJ Honours First CPS Akin Fasae, Unveils Annual Lecture to Immortalise Media Icon

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ekiti State Council, has announced the establishment of an annual public lecture in honor of Chief Akin Fasae, the state’s first Chief Press Secretary and a pioneering figure in Nigerian journalism. The initiative aims to celebrate his contributions to media development and inspire future generations of journalists and communication professionals.

NUJ Ekiti Chairman, Comrade Kayode Babatuyi, made the announcement during the formal presentation of the notification letter to Chief Fasae. He revealed that the initiative had received the approval of NUJ’s National President, Alhaji Alhassan Yahaya, following a resolution of the State Executive Council, reflecting the council’s commitment to promoting professional excellence.

The lecture, officially named the “Chief Biodun Akin Fasae Annual Lecture,” is designed to feature distinguished speakers, interactive panel discussions, and audience participation. The inaugural edition is scheduled for March 26, 2026, at Sanni Abacha Hall, Old Governor’s Office, Okebarike, Ado Ekiti. Hon. Akintunde Rotimi, representing Oye/Ikole at the National Assembly, is set to deliver the keynote address.

Speaking on the purpose of the initiative, Babatuyi said the lecture would celebrate Chief Fasae’s legacy, promote media professionalism and ethics, and motivate journalists and communication practitioners across Ekiti State and beyond. He described the lecture as a platform to reinforce high standards in the practice of journalism.

He further explained that the program would serve as a tool for strengthening ethical journalism, enhancing public communication, and ensuring that Chief Fasae’s example continues to guide upcoming journalists. “It is critical that we honor those who laid the foundation for professional journalism in Ekiti,” Babatuyi added.

Chief Fasae, who has dedicated over fifteen years to journalism, expressed his appreciation for the honor. “I am encouraged to continue contributing to the growth of NUJ and the journalism profession at large,” he said, acknowledging the recognition of his work and the mentorship he has provided over the years.

Babatuyi highlighted the enduring impact of Chief Fasae on journalism in the state. “A strong foundation is crucial. NUJ stands today as both a professional body and a trade union thanks to leaders like Chief Fasae. His guidance exemplifies true leadership,” he remarked, underscoring Fasae’s role in shaping ethical and professional journalism in Ekiti.

The lecture series is planned to rotate annually, providing opportunities to award journalists for outstanding contributions to the profession. It is also expected to attract leading media practitioners and communication experts, creating a platform for knowledge sharing and professional growth.

Babatuyi noted that the program has the potential to grow into a nationally recognised event, capable of drawing attention from top government officials, including the President of Nigeria, and enhancing Ekiti’s reputation as a centre for media excellence.

The State Council acknowledged the technical advisory body that supported the planning and rollout of the lecture series. Babatuyi concluded by paying a personal tribute to Chief Fasae, praising his mentorship, guidance, and lasting influence within NUJ and the wider journalistic community, ensuring that his legacy will continue to inspire generations of media practitioners.
