EKSU VC, Babatola Calls for Sustainability in Nigeria’s Education Curriculum

The Vice-Chancellor of Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti, Prof. Babatola Ayodele, has called for the integration of sustainability concepts into Nigeria’s educational curriculum to better equip students for emerging global challenges.

Ayodele, a Professor of Educational Management, made the call while delivering a keynote address at the 2nd International Conference of the Faculty of Education, Federal University, Oye-Ekiti. The event was held at the institution’s Fasina Conference Centre.

According to him, education must go beyond preparing students for employment to equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed to tackle issues such as climate change, resource depletion, and social inequality. He emphasized that achieving sustainable education requires a holistic approach involving inclusive policies, educational reforms, and the adoption of innovative technologies.

“The traditional model of education, which relies heavily on memorization and standardized testing, is no longer sufficient to prepare students for the future. Instead, inclusive education must address socio-economic barriers like poverty, discrimination, and inadequate learning materials that hinder access to quality education,” Ayodele stated.

In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, Prof. Abayomi Fasina, who was represented by his deputy, Prof. Shittu, noted that the conference’s theme was crucial in tackling the diverse challenges currently facing the education sector.
