I was detained in Male Cell, Molested, Forced to Sign Postdated Cheques: Ekiti Business Woman Ogunyemi Petitions IGP.

….Alleges Ekiti Governorship Aspirant Otunba Demola Popoola to have Instigated her Unlawful Arrest

A business woman identified as Mrs Ogunyemi Elizabeth Olufunke has petitioned the Inspector General of Police Usman Baba over an alleged unlawful arrest and detention by a Team of the IGP monitoring Unit Force Headquarters Abuja which was instigated by Otunba Popoola Demola Abiodun, a Governorship aspirants in Ekiti state.

In the petition titled ” _unlawful arrest and detention of Mrs Ogunyemi Elizabeth Olufunke on the instigation by Otunba Popoola Ademola Abiodun, Usurpation of powers, assuming jurisdiction on matter already before the court of competent jurisdiction, forceful collection of cheques by men of IGP monitoring Unit, Force Headquarters Abuja”_ signed by Barrister L.A Fasanmi on behalf of Mrs Ogunyemi, The Governorship aspirants in the just concluded primary election in Ekiti state was alleged to have instigated the arrest of Mrs Ogunyemi on a Financial case which was already already before a court of competent jurisdiction.

The office of the  Executive Secretary, National Human Rights Commission at No 19. Aguyi Ironsi Street, Maitama, Abuja and the office of the International Federation of Women Lawyers FIDA, Ministry of Justice, Shagari Way, Maitama, Abuja were also copied but BeyondNews Editor could not ascertain whether the petition was received by Police.

Part of the Allegation was that the team of the IGP monitoring team, Force Headquarters Abuja on the night of 28th, March 2022 stormed the office premises of Mrs Ogunyemi, arrested and detained her at the Police Headquarters Ado Ekiti, where they denied her access to her lawyer and medications as well as put her in the male cell where before whisking her away to Abuja.

Barrister Fasanmi explained that his client was forced to write another statement as against the one she made in respect of the case already for the High Court in Ado Ekiti, wherein she was made to indict herself that she was owing Otunba Popoola Ademola as well as signed Two different post-dated cheques of Ten Million Naira each for Otunba Popoola.

The petition wondered why the IGP Monitoring Unit, Force Headquarters, Abuja would embark on the alleged illegal act knowing that the case was already before a court of competent jurisdiction, the act which is tantamount to contempt of the court.
It therefore called on the IGP to investigate the matter and sanction officers involved and the alleged Otunba Popoola Demola Abiodun.

The Content of the Bulletin reads as follows:

Our client briefed us that there was an issue between her and one OTUNBA POPOOLA DEMOLA ABIODUN, a Gevemonship Aspirant in the just concluded Govemorship primary election in Ekit State, in respect of financial relationship, wherein the said OTUNBA POPODLA DEMOLA ABIODUN lodged a complaint to the Commissioner of Police Ekiti State Command, against our client and same case was referred to the State Intelligence Bureau, Ekiti State Command for investigation

Our Client further briefed us that she was arrested on the 24” February 2022, by men of the Nigerian Police, Ekiti State Command and she was made to write statement regarding the case.

“Our Client briefed us that after the close of investigation by the State Intelligence Bureau, Ekiti State Command, that the matter was
subsequently charged to court in CHARGE NUMBER: HAD/22G/2022. BETWEEN INSPECTOR GENERAL OF POLICE V. OLUFUNKE ELIZABETH OGUNYEMI.

Our client further briefed us that the matter has been adjourned by the court to the 25 April, 2023 for hearing and  hearing notice served on our client by the Principal Registrar, Ekiti State Judiciary.

“Sir, our client also briefed us that the said OTUNBA POPOOLA DEMOLA ABIODUN, a Governorship Aspirant in the just concluded Gevemorship primary election in Ekiti State has already instituted a civil action against our client at the High Court of Ekiti State in SUIT NO: HAD/35/2022 BETWEEN POPOOLA ADEMOLA ABIODUN V. OGUNYEMI ELIZABETH OLUFUNKE, which actually came up for hearing on the 29” March, 2022.

To the greatest surprise and embarrassment of our client, a team of the IGP MONITORING UNIT, FORCE HEADQUARTERS, ABUJA stormed the office promises of our client at night in a commando manner on the 28” March 2022, arrested our client on a matter which is already before a court of competent jurisdiction and detained her at the Police Headquarters Ekiti State Command without allowing her access to her medications and lawyer. Our client vomited blood in the police Cell she

“Sir we urge you to use your good office have this matter investigated to prevent it from setting a bad precedent in our legal system and sanction appropriately where necessary to prevent a recurrence of such illegal act by men of the IGP MONITORING UNIT, FORCE HEADQUARTERS, ABUJA and on our part, we shall take every necessary steps within the ambit of the law to have this abnormality redressed.

When Beyondnews contacted the governorship aspirant Otunba Demola Popoola, he said that the woman  was owing him some certain amounts and had refused to pay.

He said he had all necessary documents to back up his claims daring her to do the needful according to the law.
