Ekiti State House of Assembly has solicited the continued support of members of drivers’ unions for government efforts at developing the State, and warned against acts that may be inimical to the peace
and progress of Ekiti State.
Speaking in Ado Ekiti at a meeting of the joint Committee of the House on Works and Transport, and Committee on Security and Special Duties with leaders of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW)
and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), the
Deputy Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Hakeem Jamiu
highlighted efforts of the Assembly and the State Government at creating an enabling environment for members of the 2 unions to thrive in the state.
The Deputy Speaker charged the leaders of the Unions to impress on their members the need to always maintain peace and not allowed themselves to be used as thugs to disturb the peace of the society.
Congratulating the leaders of the two Unions, Chief Fadipe Joseph of the NURTW and Mr Sunday Adeola of the RTEAN on their recent emergence as State Chairmen of their respective unions, Rt. Hon. Jamiu noted that their emergence was peaceful and they should therefore sustain
the peaceful conduct of their members.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the House Committee on ppPpppppSecurity and
Special Duties, Hon Lateef Akanle explained that the meeting was convened to solicit the continued support of the drivers’ unions at
guaranteeing enduring peace and progress in the State.
According to him, the Assembly recently enacted a law to regulate activities of motor vehicle spare parts dealers passed to protects motorists, check exploitations and ensure that the existing peace in
the state is not breached, stressing the need to reciprocate government’s gesture by remaining law-abiding and peaceful.
The Chairman of the NURTW, Chief Fadipe Joseph and his RTEAN counterpart, Mr Sunday Adeola said that their unions had been peaceful and without any threat of lawlessness since their assumption of
office, and pledged to sustain the trend.
They said the focus of the new leadership is to make the unions reputable and promised a relentless effort at making the profession
respectable and honest.
They however appealed to Government and all relevant agencies to find a lasting solution to the present scarcity and high price of petroleum products in the country, emphasizing the need for government’s
assistance and patronage to improve their economic relevance in the society.
Other lawmakers at the meeting are, the Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Hon Adeoye Aribasoye and the lawmaker representing Ado Constituency 1, Hon Toyin Lucas.
