…as Reps Deputy Speaker, Kalu seeks stronger legislative synergies

The Speaker, Ekiti State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adeoye Aribasoye says it is incumbent on legislators to amplify the voices of the people they represent so as to reposition the country’s future on the path of values and transformation.

Aribasoye stated this in his welcome address at the Ikogosi Warm Springs Resorts, venue of a two-day Retreat for Speakers and Principal Officers of State Houses of Assembly in the Southwest.

The Ekiti speaker, who chairs the southwest caucus of speakers of state assemblies, declared that legislations made by the legislative arm in the country would largely act as catalyst for economic and political prosperity.

The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie-Kalu who declared the retreat open was joined by the Secretary to Ekiti State Government, Alhaja Habitat Adubiaro who represented the Governor at the programme tagged : “Strengthening Democratic Governance at the Subnational Level”.

Underscoring the kernel of the retreat, Aribasoye posited that the legislators would explore the avenue to brainstorm on how to enhance lawmaking strategies for the betterment of their states and the nation as a whole.

“As legislators, we occupy a strategic space in the governance framework of our country. Our work is not just about passing laws; it is about shaping the future of our communities and ensuring that the voices of our constituents are heard and represented.

“Our collective goal is to unlock innovative solutions to the pressing challenges we face in our regions. The theme of our gathering, “Strengthening Democratic Governance at the Subnational Level,” is not merely a slogan; it reflects our commitment to driving significant change.

He lauded Kalu for his focused determination to ensure success of the ongoing constitutional amendments, saying the programme would help in ramping up the development of the country when actualised.

The Ekiti assembly helmsman also eulogised the Chairman of Cavista Holdings Limited, Mr. John Olajide for progressively partnering the assembly leadership for legislative success, just as he commended the Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC) and, the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office (FCDO) for their support in making the retreat possible and stimulating effective and responsive legislative framework.

Rt. Hon. Aribasoye saluted the Speakers of Houses of Assembly in the Southwest and other principal officers for their commitment to regional development, in spite of political differences and ideologies.

“Your presence here today is a testament to our collective dedication to improving governance and legislative practices in our regions.

“As we embark on this journey of learning, sharing, and collaboration, I urge each of you to engage actively. Let us challenge one another, share our experiences, and emerge from this retreat equipped with the tools and insights necessary to elevate our legislative practices”

The frontline lawmaker proposed that the retreat should be replicated across other geopolitical zones, pointing out the significance of the dialogue and collaboration being extended beyond the southwest borders to foster unity and usher in good governance across board.

“Together, we can lay the foundation for a brighter, more prosperous future for our states and our nation.Thank you, and welcome once again to this pivotal retreat. Let us make the most of this opportunity to learn, grow, and collaborate” he said.

In his speech at the retreat, Rt Hon Okezie-Kalu noted that the southwest assembly speakers have set an enviable pattern of zealousness for the development of their region through the instrumentality of quality legislation.

He highlighted current global complexities as one requiring productive legislative synergies at state and national levels, adding that viable regional ties would positively impact the polity.

The House of Representatives Deputy Speaker, said the future of the country could only be better and positively impactful, if all stakeholders strike a deal to work together regardless of political differences.

Former Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi and other experts at the forum took turns to share their thoughts with the lawmakers, prescribing relevant steps required for richer legislative input and output.
