In the ever-evolving media terrain of Nigeria, where the boundaries of journalism continue to expand, one name stands out and roars as a symbol of innovation, integrity, and leadership; the Name is Kayode Joseph Babatuyi, the Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ekiti State Council, and Senior Editor at the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), Progress FM, Ado-Ekiti.

Babatuyi has carved a niche for himself as a champion of development journalism and a mentor to many in the industry.

His rise to prominence was no accident. It was built on years of dedication, hard work, and an unwavering commitment to journalistic excellence. Starting as a young reporter at Progress FM, Ado-Ekiti, Babatuyi quickly distinguished himself with his in-depth reporting, respect for professional ethics, and passion for community development. His ability to balance the core principles of journalism with modern media trends earned him the admiration of colleagues and senior professionals alike.

This reputation set the stage for his emergence as the NUJ State Secretary, a role in which he showcased his remarkable organizational and leadership skills. His tenure was marked by a renewed sense of professionalism within the union, and under the guidance of his mentor, Lion Rotimi Ojomoyela—a two-term NUJ Chairman widely regarded as one of the best in the history of the union in Ekiti.

Babatuyi’s leadership capabilities  were nourished to flourish under Ojomoyela who intentionally decided to build humans while also building relationships and infrastructures. People like Ojomoyela are indeed rare, he was never intimidated by the potentialities of Babatuyi, instead, he gave him the platform to explore. By December 2023, when it was time to elect a new chairman, NUJ members unanimously agreed that no other person could have continued the good work except from the humble, born and trained leader Babatuyi; the right man to lead the union forward, making his emergence unopposed.

Since assuming office, Babatuyi has redefined the practice of journalism in Ekiti, particularly in the digital space. Understanding the shift in media consumption, he has led several initiatives to equip young journalists with the skills required to excel in the modern media environment.

Through mentorship programs, training sessions, and workshops as well as personalized sessions, he has encouraged the adoption of digital tools while reinforcing the values of credibility and responsible journalism.

His leadership extends beyond digital transformation. Under his watch, journalism in Ekiti has experienced a resurgence of integrity, with many practitioners moving away from unethical practices that once tainted the profession. He has been instrumental in stamping out quackery and discouraging the culture of brown-envelope journalism, which often left reporters at the mercy of powerful figures. His leadership has instead encouraged journalists to embrace their watchdog role without fear or compromise, creating genuine and innovative ways to ensuring financial independence of journalists.

However, Babatuyi does not see the media as an adversary to institutions. He believes in a balanced approach where journalists hold authorities accountable while fostering dialogue for societal progress. His deep respect for veteran journalists has further strengthened the NUJ, as he continually bridges the gap between traditional and modern journalism, ensuring that wisdom from seasoned professionals informs contemporary practice.

His inclusive leadership style has brought unprecedented unity within the NUJ in Ekiti. He actively seeks input from members, making collective decisions that benefit the profession as a whole. This approach has led to significant improvements in journalists’ welfare and has empowered them to perform their duties more effectively.

Babatuyi’s contributions have not gone unnoticed. In February 2025, he was honored with the “Ekiti Future Award”, recognizing him as one of the state’s emerging leaders making a difference. Deserving of the award, Babatuyi is indeed a future man. Earlier, the Ekiti State Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture (EKICCIMA) conferred honorary membership on him for his impact on media and development communication in the Southwest. These accolades are a testament to the far-reaching effects of his work—not just within the NUJ, but across the entire state.

For him, journalism is more than just a profession; it is a tool for social change. He has actively promoted development-focused reporting, urging journalists to shed light on issues affecting local communities. His collaboration with government agencies and media stakeholders has also helped push for policies that protect journalists, ensuring that they can carry out investigative work without intimidation.

From organizing capacity-building programs to creating safe spaces for discourse on the challenges facing the media, Babatuyi has set a new standard for journalism in Ekiti. His leadership has transformed the NUJ into a forward-thinking, proactive body that prioritizes professionalism and press freedom.

Kayode Babatuyi embodies the future of journalism in Ekiti State. Through his dedication, mentorship, and commitment to ethical reporting, he has not only raised the bar for media practice but has also inspired a new generation of journalists to embrace their role as agents of positive change. His story is one of vision, resilience, and an unwavering belief in the power of the press to shape society for the better.
