The Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology, Ikere Ekiti (BOUESTI), recently held a forum where seasoned media professionals discussed the growing importance of photojournalism in today’s media landscape.
The event, organized by the Department of Mass Communication, focused on equipping students with the practical skills needed to excel in the competitive world of media and communication.
Delivering the keynote address, Mr. Yemi Olajutemu, a journalist with over 15 years of experience in broadcasting and digital publishing, encouraged students to embrace digital platforms to create opportunities for themselves. He said the current economic challenges in Nigeria have led to a downsizing in traditional media houses, making the job market more competitive.
“The reality is that the media industry has become tougher, but digital tools give you a chance to stand out. Photojournalism is no longer an optional skill—it has become central to how stories are told and consumed,” he said.
Olajutemu advised students to explore freelance reporting and internships with online platforms like RemoteWork Newspaper, which he described as a useful avenue for gaining practical experience while still in school. He also spoke about the importance of convergence in today’s media, where outlets are expanding their reach through multimedia storytelling. According to him, even radio, often called the “blind medium,” is now using visual content like live streaming to connect with audiences.
The General Manager of BOUESTI’s radio station, Mr. Adeyinka Olanipekun, urged students to develop multiple skills to stay relevant in the fast-changing media industry. “This is the era of multitasking, where backpack journalism has become the standard,” he said, explaining that journalists are now expected to combine writing, photography, and video production.
He praised the university for blending theoretical learning with practical experience, adding that such initiatives would help students become self-reliant and innovative.
The coordinator of the event, Mrs. Olanike Olushola, emphasized the department’s commitment to preparing students for global opportunities. She noted that the annual lecture was designed to give students the tools they need to compete with their counterparts worldwide.
“We are determined to ensure our students are not just equipped with theoretical knowledge but also with the skills that will set them apart,” she said.
Another speaker, Mr. Ajayi, a communication expert, commended the students for their creative projects, describing them as evidence of the department’s dedication to quality education. He noted that such initiatives would help bridge the gap between classroom learning and industry demands.
The event, which has become an annual feature at BOUESTI, reflects the university’s commitment to providing students with hands-on experience that complements their academic training, preparing them for success in a challenging and evolving global media industry.
