Ekiti State Government has received 10,000 dosage of misoprostol tablets to reduce postpartum hemorrhage which means bleeding after birth to bearest minimum.
The Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr Oyebanji Filani while receiving the medicines at Data Bank Ministry of Health Ado Ekiti thanked the Federal ministry of health and Population Services International for choosing Ekiti as one of the 18 states who benefited from the donation.
The Executive secretary Primary Health Care Agency, Doctor Ayodele Seluwa who received the drugs on behalf of the state Commissioner for Health promised that the drugs will be evenly distributed to ensure that postpartum hemorrhage is drastically reduced in the state.
A health consultant from the Federal Ministry of Health Dr Robert Daniel while making the presentation said the Federal Ministry of Health is implementing a project on community distribution and use of misoprostol for the prevention and treatment of bleeding after birth which increases maternal death experienced by women of productive age of 15-49years in Nigeria.
He said the overview of maternal health in Nigeria shows that the country has the highest maternal death globally with 512 to 100,000 live births and postpartum hemorrhage among women of childbearing age.
He further stressed that statistics also shows that Ekiti state recorded the highest death through postpartum hemorrhage in the South west region of the country in recent dara analysis.
The representative of the Population Services International Mr Amadi Norberth while presenting 10,000 dosage of misoprostol tablets said the drug is free, effective and safe.
Being one of the 18 States selected for the programme,The sensitization on the use of the drug is expected to be carried out in 3 local Governments one from each Senatorial District of the state.
Some of the participants who expressed gratitude to the donor believed that the drugs will help to wipe out maternal death in Ekiti State.
