As part of efforts to promote inclusion and economic empowerment, the Ekiti State Government has unveiled a vocational training programme for 120 persons with disabilities (PWDs) across its 16 local government areas.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Office of Disability Affairs, is in line with Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji’s vision of shared prosperity and self-reliance for all residents.
The programme will equip beneficiaries with practical skills in information and communication technology (ICT), tailoring and fashion design, hairdressing and cosmetology, shoemaking, catering and hospitality management, as well as entrepreneurship.
The training, scheduled to commence on March 31, 2025, will take place at the Ekiti State Skill Acquisition Centre, providing participants with access to modern facilities and experienced instructors.
Speaking on the initiative, the Special Adviser on Special Education and Social Inclusion, Princess Agboola Adetoun, emphasized the administration’s commitment to empowering PWDs beyond palliative measures. She noted that the training would enable them to become self-sufficient and contribute meaningfully to the state’s economy.
“Empowering persons with disabilities through vocational training is a vital investment in the future of our state. His Excellency, Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji, envisions a future where PWDs are not just recipients of support but are given the skills and resources to become independent entrepreneurs and professionals,” she stated.
The programme will run in two batches over nine months, incorporating a three-month industrial training segment. Upon completion, participants will receive empowerment kits and trade proficiency certificates to facilitate their transition into self-employment or the workforce.
Eligibility for the training extends to both residents and indigenes of Ekiti State. A local government attestation certificate may be required before commencement, while accommodation will be provided for participants traveling from distant locations.
This initiative showcased the state government’s resolve to creating an inclusive society where all citizens, regardless of physical ability, have equal access to opportunities for growth and development.
